Can A Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Improve Your Health?

Water filtration has become a hot topic. As people search for solutions for the toxins found in their tap water, they will undoubtedly run across reverse osmosis.

Here Are The Facts About  Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Systems

Fact 1: Reverse Osmosis Is Expensive

If you happen to find a system that is not expensive, it will not be effective. The ones that fit under the kitchen counter are not too awfully expensive, but you could get a selective stage filtration device for about a third of the price.  And, selective filtration would actually do more to protect your health.

Fact 2: Reverse Osmosis Wastes Water

As you may be aware, our freshwater supplies are not unlimited.  There is plenty of seawater on the planet, but we can’t drink it.  We can treat it and make it drinkable.  But, it still tastes pretty bad.

Climate change or global warming will contribute to the problem of dwindling freshwater as the years go by. We really cannot afford to waste a drop of it.  Home reverse osmosis systems waste gallons of it. They are suitable only for homes that have no access to freshwater and must treat saltwater instead.

Fact 3: Reverse Osmosis Will Remove Healthy Minerals

Dietary minerals are necessary for good health. They are needed for homeostasis, which is the balance of fluids within the body. By drinking beverages depleted of minerals, athletes quickly become dehydrated. Anyone working out in the yard on a hot day could suffer from dehydration, despite having consumed de-mineralized water.

Fact 4: Reverse Osmosis Does Not Remove Chlorine

Chlorine is a chemical used by public treatment facilities to kill bacteria and algae. It tastes terrible and smells worse than it tastes. It is also bad for you.

Anyone who says you can achieve better health through reverse osmosis must be unaware of the health problems associated with chlorine consumption. In children, it causes anemia. In adults, it causes digestive disturbances. It even causes diarrhea in your pets.

Possibly the worst thing about chlorine is that it causes the formation of byproducts called THMs. Exposure to THMs is known to be accompanied by an increased risk of several types of cancer, including bladder cancer; this was rare until chlorination became so common.

Some home reverse osmosis systems now include a granular carbon step, which does remove the chlorine, but not the THMs.  Additional filtration media are needed to remove those chemicals.  That’s why we recommend multi-stage selective filtration like the one made by Aquasana.

There are too many toxins in our environments. We need to reduce our risks of exposure as much as possible.

Fact 5: A Reverse Osmosis System Is  Difficult to Maintain

Even the manufacturers cannot tell you how often to replace the filtering membranes inside the units. They say it depends on how much water you use. If you don’t have a replacement schedule, any protection provided by the units is lost.

Therefore the question, Can a reverse osmosis water filter improve your health?  The facts indicate that it simply cannot.
